Fibonacci
Leonardo da Pisa, nicknamed Fibonacci, was an Italian mathematician born in 1175 AD. He introduced Europe to the decimal system, including the concept of zero as the first digit in the number scale. Fibonacci discovered a number sequence that is named for him. The sequence is: 1,1,2,3,5,8,13,21,34 and so on to infinity. If you add the two previous numbers in the sequence, the sum is the next number. After the first several numbers in the Fibonacci sequence, the ratio of any number to the next higher number is approximately .618, and the next lower number is 1.618.

In the currency markets, the commonly used sequence of ratios is 23.6 %, 38.2%, 50% and 61.8%. These percentages are called Fibonacci retracement levels. A retracement occurs when the market reverses and wipes out some or all of the gains made during the previous rebound. The above-stated percentages can be used to find these pullbacks in the currency market.

Identifying a Fibonacci retracement requires that the analyst anticipate changes in trends as prices near the lines created by the Fibonacci theories. After a major price move, prices will often retrace. As prices retrace, support and resistance levels occur at or near the Fibonacci retracement levels.

Fibonacci retracement levels can easily be displayed by connecting a trend line from an identified high point to an identified low point. By finding the difference between the high and low, the analyst can apply the % ratios to reveal the pullbacks.

The difficulty in using Fibonacci is that after the analyst has applied these calculations to multiple high and low and closing prices in a number of time frames, the chart is too data-laden to be useful. That’s why most analysts only use Fibonacci in a single time frame with only one or two currencies’ high and low and closing prices.
